Not So Long Ago

Someone famous once said that those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it, or words to that effect. This always seems to take the form of a warning about repeating the negative things of history. But understanding history helps us to do more than just avoid repeating it's mistakes. It helps us understand ourselves. We don't have a complete understanding of who we are until we know our history.

In this book, Margaret Angel attempts, through stories, paintings, and sketches, to help residents of the Concord-Farragut area to understand some of the history of West Knox County. For those who grew up here, or who have lived here for a number of years, this book will hopefully help in understanding who we are.

In this second edition, we have added an appendix which shows the location of the subject of each painting as it looks today. This will give the newcomer a sense of how the area has changed over the years, as the community has grown and developed.

We hope you enjoy reading and seeing what the Concord-Farragut community was like... Not So Long Ago, whether you are remembering it, or discovering it for the first time.

(From original book)
For the past twenty years, Margaret Angel has been preserving the past with paintings and sketches of the west Knox County community in which she lives. Mrs. Angel, a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, was born in Athens, Tennessee, and moved with her parents to Knoxville at the age of twelve. She has lived with her husband in the Concord-Farragut community for the past thirty years. The mother of three grown children, she has taught in both the Oak Ridge and Farragut Schools, as well as in the continuing education department of the University of Tennessee.

Through her friendship with many of the old families of the community and paintings of their homes, barns, and farms, Margaret became deeply interested in the historical significance of these things to East Tennesseans. This interest and "Homecoming '86" led to the writing of this book Not So Long Ago - in the Concord-Farragut Area.
